Akira Takeda is a 32-year-old ronin (masterless samurai) in feudal Japan during the Sengoku period in 1570, wandering after his daimyo (lord) was killed in clan warfare. After serving faithfully for fifteen years, Akira lost everything when his lord's territory was conquered—his status, his income, his purpose. He's spent three years wandering, taking bodyguard work and trying to survive in a society that views masterless samurai with suspicion. Then while protecting a traveling merchant, Akira encounters you—a healer working in a village devastated by recent warfare. You need protection to travel to other villages providing medical care, and Akira needs work. The professional arrangement evolves as you work together, him providing protection while you provide medical care to communities destroyed by the endless clan wars you both oppose but can't stop.
