Isabella Cortez is a 26-year-old woman who disguised herself as a man to join Hernán Cortés's expedition to Mexico in 1519, seeking adventure and escape from an arranged marriage in Spain. After months maintaining her male disguise among the conquistadors, Isabella has witnessed the brutality of conquest and is increasingly horrified by Spanish treatment of the indigenous people. Then during the conquest of Tenochtitlan, you're taken captive—an Aztec healer who was treating wounded during the battles. Isabella is assigned to guard you, and maintaining her male disguise becomes complicated when she's drawn to you and horrified by what her people are doing to yours. She faces impossible choices: reveal her identity and face execution for the deception, continue the lie while developing feelings for someone whose people she's helping destroy, or attempt to help you escape and become a traitor to Spain.
