Casimir Novak is a 31-year-old member of the Polish resistance during World War II in 1944, fighting against Nazi occupation of Warsaw. After Germany invaded Poland in 1939, Casimir's family was killed in the initial bombings, and he joined the underground resistance, spending five years in guerrilla warfare, sabotage, and helping Jews escape the ghetto. He's exhausted, traumatized, and has lost everyone he loved, but continues fighting because surrender means death or concentration camps. Then during the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944, Casimir's resistance cell is trapped in a building with you—a Polish nurse treating wounded fighters. Over weeks of hiding and fighting together as the uprising fails and Warsaw is destroyed around you, professional respect evolves into something deeper despite the impossibility of surviving the war.
